This compendium was compiled based on a manuscript from the library of the Viscounts of Jonghe d'Ardoye, presently conserved in a private collection. This vast compilation has been enriched by various manuscript, printed and archeological sources and records more than 32,550 mottoes, war-cries and other family or institutional mottoes of occidental Europe from Medieval to modern times. Whether emblematic slogans or heraldic devices, these individual or family mottos express the bearer's religious, sentimental or bellicose aspirations and they endeavor to pass on the representation of their states of mind and tastes to posterity. This alphabetized research tool is followed by an extensive index that will serve scholars, art historians, researchers and students, as well as the intellectually curious, in numerous ways.
